Sustainable Environment for Quality of Life (SEQL) is the name of the region’s environmental program that began with a major grant from USEPA.  Its purpose is three-fold:

  • To develop, promote, and assist with implementation of specific actions that communities, businesses, and individuals can take to enhance environmental quality

  • To promote and find ways to advance the concept of “integrated planning”—that land use and transportation planning are interdependent, that both have environmental ramifications, and that other elements such as energy use play a big role in what is sustainable and what is not.  This particular aspect of SEQL is significant in that it breaks down the traditional silos that surround areas of specialization and aims to reduce the unintended consequences of decisions.

  • To build into decision-making practices and processes consideration of environmental impacts, so that the environment becomes a factor in all public decision-making, and so that private decision-makers (including individuals) have higher awareness.
